This month's twice monthly family Story Hours were much anticipated events for families, students and the community. Each year, Project READ packs hundreds up backpacks with much needed school supplies and distributes them to all of our Project READ youth learners and family members to ensure they start the school off on the right foot.
Staff, community volunteers and even our own RWC Library Director, Derek Wolfgram handed out over 200 backpacks this year between the two events. Students ranging from Kindergarten through 12th grade were able to proudly show off their new backpacks. Students were also able to create back-to-school crafts, including popular backpack charms. Our youngest learners and families stepped into the world of imagination with interactive children's performer, Andy Z. While each student was given a new hard cover dictionary to bring home.
Second Harvest Food Bank continues to help make health literacy and nutrition an important part of our family curriculum by offering nutritious snacks to our families.
All families were able to take home a bag of fresh produce. Hands On Bay Area (HOBA) volunteers helped make these events successful by volunteering to set up, hand out backpacks and assist in our pre-literacy crafts with our youngest learners.
