DREAM BIG: One Project READ Family's Success Story

Sequoia High School DREAM Club is made up of "Dreamers," undocumented young people who have grown up in this country trying to find a path to citizenship and fulfilling their dreams of education. The club's mission is "... to create limitless educational opportunities for undocumented students, through political activism and fundraising for scholarships."
Tonight is the DREAM Club's annual dinner and fundraiser. Jose, a Project READ teen tutor is a member of the DREAM Club and will be presenting a speech tonight's dinner. Like many of our families, his family's story of perseverance is inspiring and encouraging.
Jose's Story: My family and I Immigrated here to the United States back in 2001. My parents both don't have an education at all, which puts them in the position of not being able to have a good paying job. They have struggled to make ends meet in our household and even more now that our monthly rent has gone up this past year. I have two older sisters and one older brother. My sister was the first one in our entire family to graduate from college and get a degree, and now she is studying to be an immigration lawyer and help out in our community. My brother just recently graduated from UC Davis, and he now works at a high school. The grades that I got throughout high school ... fluctuated from year to year due to some problems that I faced that set me back, such as my dad receiving open heart surgery. I currently have an overall 3.0 GPA and my grades currently are about B average, but I am working on getting...my grades up.
Jose is currently applying to colleges in the CSU system, as well as volunteering after school in our community, including as a Project READ teen tutor and mentor. He will be recognized this evening at the DREAM Club dinner. To hear Jose present his story or to support the DREAM Club, consider attending tonight's event.
