2017 Year in Review


Project READ continues to offer literacy and educational programming that enriches the lives of our community members most in need. As the needs in our community grow and change, our programs evolve. In 2017, we continued on our path of expansion and impact. Read about the difference our programming made in 2017.

ADULT SERVICES: Our adult programming helps members of the community, including those who are incarcerated, improve upon their literacy and life skills.We offer one-on-one and small group tutoring to Redwood City residents who read and/or write below the 7th grade reading level, as well as home or library- based programs for parents whose literacy goals include reading to their children.

Our inmate dual intervention peer tutoring program helps incarcerated parents and caregivers increase their literacy skills to enable them to read to their children and GED preparation to prepare themselves for a successful re-entry into the community.

Adult Computer Lab: Adult learners also are able to improve upon their language and literacy skills through web-based programs in our Adult Computer Lab.

Books Given Away: 2,000

Incarcerated Learners & Tutors Volunteer Service: The incarcerated learners and tutors donated more than 9,000 hours of service that contribute to building peaceful communities inside the jails and empower these willing volunteers to continue being of service to others upon release.

Total Incarcerated Learners/Tutors Volunteer Hours: 9,249

  • 474 hours of tutor training

  • 145 hours of facilitation training

  • 860 hours for “Peace in a Pod” service project

  • 861 hours facilitating retreats

  • 432 hours planning and preparation for retreats and projects

  • 486 hours to create and donate art for Project READ BBQ

  • 5,991 hours of peer tutoring

YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES: Our goal is to “level the playing field” for disadvantaged, low-income families by providing literacy intervention and educational experiences that will help them to succeed in school and gain self esteem to reach their full potentials.

One-on-One Tutoring: Project READ matches K - 12 youth in one-on-one pairs with trained community tutors to improve upon reading and critical thinking skills.

Teen Tutoring: Our dual intervention programs match academically at-risk teen tutors with struggling elementary school students—simultaneously increasing the literacy skills of both the elementary school students and high school student tutors.

Enrichment & Supplemental Literacy Programs:

  • Project STEAM (NEW) is a pilot program created by Project READ and community partner the Junior League in an effort to provide teen programming focused around Science,Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM), while offering educational support through tutoring and mentoring. Family Learning Adventures: This program fosters creativity, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills in order to strengthen the foundation for all other areas of literacy and educational development. These weekend workshops provide families with opportunities to create and innovate together, focusing on literacy concepts and STEAM curriculum vital to succeed in school. Family Attendance: 200

  • Field Trips: Students also participate in field trips, from college tours to museums, allowing hands-on learning.Story Hours: Free parenting books, materials and high-quality hardbound children's book are given out at our twice-monthly Story Hours. Whole families are immersed in literacy and art through entertainment and pre-literacy crafts. Family Attendance: 154; Pre K Attendance: 173; K-5 Attendance: 156

  • Book Clubs: Project READ Book Clubs engage students and their families in reading, art and experimentation. Tutors read in small groups with our youngest learners and their parents, then work on related activities to encourage important literacy skills. Our Pre K Book Club focuses on early intervention, by working with families with young children on pre-literacy skills and exposure to reading.

  • Game Night: This program focuses on specific learning areas, such as expressive and receptive language, in addition to encouraging community building and socialization. Game play is a fun way to engage students in specific learning objectives.

  • Summer Programming & Intercessions: Throughout the summer, we offer literacy and enrichment programming per age group, including Summer Reading Group based off the summer reading lists of the schools or suggested reading by teachers. Additionally we offer art and literacy days throughout school breaks/intercessions. This year students created art for our annual BBQ.
